Chennai, 31 January (IANS): Tamil Nadu Power Minister Senthil Balaji said on Tuesday that the government has extended the last date to connect Aadhaar to electricity consumers to February 15 from the previous January 31.
The Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory for consumers to link their Aadhaar card with an electricity consumer number to provide subsidies for the first 100 units of electricity consumption.
In a press conference after interacting with senior Tamil Nadu Electricity Commission officials, Balaji said this will be the last extension of the deadline as only 9% of consumers linked Aadhaar cards with electricity consumer numbers stand up.
He said out of the 2.67 million electricity consumers in the state, 2.42 million had linked their Aadhaar number with the electricity number. These consumers include home, cottage, agricultural, handloom and power loom weavers, the minister said.
The minister said that out of 2.17 million domestic consumers, only 1.5 million connected their Aadhaar with electricity numbers. The biggest backlog, Balaji said, is linking the Aadhar details of those connected with the hut. Out of 944,000 consumers in this category, only 511,000 consumers associated Aadhaar with the number of electricity consumers.
